Notes from the Chair

The chair is the head of the committee and represents The Hampton Society at public events.

Winter 2025

It is a great privilege to have been invited to chair the Hampton Society. As you will know the Society has been in existence for almost seventy years and is a widely respected Community Association. I take over from William Redfern who has led the Society ably for eight years and is a hard act to follow. Given that his time in the chair included the pandemic I am hoping to have a less interesting time than he did! I have no radical plans to change the direction of the Society but hope that the Society will continue to evolve and serve the needs of our large membership. I hope you will free to contact me if you think there is something new that we should be doing.

Some thank-yous

I would like to thank the Committee Members for being so welcoming to me in my new role as Chair. Also, for their hard work in making the Society continue to be so successful.

I would like to thank those who help with the bar and the refreshments, especially Derek and Mary May. They provide a warm welcome at our meetings and I appreciate their efforts. They have also provided an interesting selection of soft drinks which is helpful because we can only apply for a certain number of alcohol licences per year.

Recent Events

In the autumn term we had three interesting lectures. Yes, they were all well presented and very interesting: “The Pioneering Life of Mary Wortley Montague” by Jo Willett, “A Local History on Car Manufacturing” by Robin Field-Smith and “Audrey Hepburn and Her War” by Howard Slater. In the run-up to Christmas there was an enjoyable Jazz Evening led by the talented Roger Perrin and his Jazz Ensemble.

Forward Look

In 2025 we will continue with our varied and interesting programme. In the spring we have just one lecture which will be on the 25th March, and given by Siobham Clarke on the subject of the “The Tower of London”. Don’t forget to sign up for the Members’ lunch at Squiffy’s at the Jolly Coopers on the 24thJanuary and come along with a team (or be willing to join one) at the Quiz Night on Friday 7th February. Then, to round off our Hampton Society year we have the AGM on the 10th April.

Most of our events are held at St Mary’s Community Hall in Hampton and I hope to see you there. Please come up and introduce yourself.
